an apartment complex in watertown. residents in watertown and surround surrounding areas continue to be told to stay inside their homes and not just anybody except law enforcement. one of the two suspects in the bombing was killed last night in an exchange of gunfire with police, the other suspect in a stolen vehicle apparently escaped although police believe they may have cornered him in watertown. before the shootout and chase, the suspects who are apparently brothers, told police officer on the campus of mit, police officials say the deadly drama began last night when the two brothers apparently from chec chechnia, held up a 7/11, then

shot a police, and made contact. the man was identified always the boston bombing suspect. appeared to throw several suspects at the cars. one of the suspects left the car and escaped, the other was traifly injured. this morning officials including the governor cautioning everybody to be very careful and again here is what the governor today early this morning. >> suspect one is dead suspect two is on the run. we have an mbta officer who is serious wounded and in surgery right now, we have an mit security officer who has been killed. there is a massive manhunt

[♪ theme music ♪] >> stephanie: good morning, it is the "stephanie miller show." as i was saying to david shuster, literally a breaking news situation changing by the moment. we'll get david back on the line to find out the latest, charlie pierce you have already talked to this morning. he is not in boston logan airport is closed -- >> right. he is in d.c., and supposed to be flying back to boston today, and can't get a flight. >> stephanie: right. and this is all going down a couple of blocks from -- >> from blog headquarters.

>> stephanie: right. we await david shuster with all of the latest. wow. wow. a lot of activity. let's start with happened tz last night. >> about 10:30 last evening a robbery took place in cham bridge. after that an*it police officer was shot on cam pass and has expired as a result of his wounds. there was a carjacking that took place as well in cambridge involving a mercedes suv. that car was discovered here in water continue to and pursued by the watertown police department. there was exchange of gunfire between the police and two suspects in the suv. during the course of that pursuit, several explosive devices were discharged from the car at the police officers.

in the exchange of the gunfire, we believe that one of the suspects was instruct and ultimately taken into custody, a second suspect was able to flee from that car, and there is an active search going on at this time. >> stephanie: david shuster joining us now with the very latest. david they have the second suspect they think in this house, correct? that's what is happening as we speak? >> yeah that's correct. they are in the process of trying to move some of the media that were closer than the police wanted. they believe he is inside. police are moving the media back, bringing in some more equipment. there's all sorts of possibilities for what happens now. what will be so remarkable now stephanie, is this is going to play out live on television, because there are all sorts of live pictures, and folks will be

able to hear. it's all going to be quite visible. at the moment, though it's essentially a standoff. the police are fairly confident that the suspect who is better known as the one in the light hat as opposed to the one in the black hat, in this apartment type house in watertown. >> stephanie: and obviously, again, in these sort of hot minutes as things are unfolding, there is a speculation that there could be hostages or not? >> i think that's one of the things they are trying to determine. it's not clear. there are conflicting reports that four or five people lived in this house. it's unsure whether any of them have gotten out or being held. there have been reports of a police scanner that the surviving brother is posting messages online taunting police.

all of this is coming up off of police scanners. but there's all kinds of traffic in the air and claims and for right now, you know, police again take their time and try to assess the situation and not do anything rash particularly if there is a possibility that there are people inside. >> stephanie: for people just waking up out here on the west coast, there has been a lot of activity. the last thing i knew was they released the photos. tell people what has hand since yesterday. >> about 10:30 last night east coast time there was apparently a robbery of a 7-eleven. we believe it was watertown. shortly thereafter there were reports of a security officer or police officer on the campus of

mit who was apparently killed in his car. somebody snuck up on him and shot him several times, and shortly after that there were a number of witness reports of a carjacking of a mercedes suv. police were able to quickly make contact with the 7-eleven and then go to the scene of where the mit officer had been killed and were able to determine that this was probably the suspects. there was gunfire exchanged at one point -- actually a couple of different points police said the two men inside the mercedes were throwing explosive devices at the police officers. one of them went off and set part of a house on fire. during the chase there was -- it appears that at some point the chase came to an end, one of the brothers fled the vehicle, the

other one was gravely injured. the injured brother was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. thus began the massive manhunt where the one brother escaped on foot in this particular area of watertown. and a short time ago perhaps within the last two hours, there were calls made to the police about fresh blood that was discovered by one of these apartment complexes and some suspicious behavior and police are being tight lipped about what other information, but they tracked down to this particular apartment house and now have the apartment house surrounded with the outstanding question of are there hostages being held inside? is there any way they can make contact. in the midst of this more information continues to come out. these two brothers are originally from chechnya, they have been living in the

united states for ten years. one was some sort of a medical student. one of them claims that he didn't understand americans, and had no american friends. so a lot of information filling in about two these two brothers are, but also we have this live standoff in watertown. >> stephanie: i was going to say, boy, a lot of news happening so quickly. david i missed when you started the whole thing. was this connected with the police releasing these photographs yesterday, was there any tip that lead to the police or was it these other crimes that they realized who they were looking for in terms of the robbery? >> it's not clear. it's not clear if the people inside the 7-eleven called police and said we were just robbed by the guys you were looking for, or that is not clear. but where the mit officer had been shot and killed, and then

descriptions of the carjacking police made a determination that these were the two. at some point, i think the police themselves released the identities of who these brothers were that they were looking for. >> stephanie: yesterday, as i say, it was just the pictures because i don't remember the names at that point. this was yesterday. >> what we're looking for right now is a suspect consistent with the description of suspect number 2, the white-capped individual who was involved in monday's bombing of the boston marathon. he was -- we have a -- a picture -- a video from the 7-eleven in cambridge last night. that he is dressed in a gray hoodie a white skinned or caucasian male with light brown

curling hair. that's the individual we are looking for at this moment. >> that's suspect number 2. >> that's suspect number 2, the white capped individual. >> stephanie: and after that they released the names? >> yeah, they released the names sometime last night, and since then all kinds of information flooded in. and again, it looks like the brother who is still alive, apparently just graduated from a prestigious high school in the boston area, and was given a $2,500 scholarship from the city of cambridge to pursue college. the other brother was apparently in medical school. these were successful at least academically, and obviously there is a whole team that is going through to analyze their facebook postings and try to figure out what may have caused

these two academically achieving brothers to snap and decide to bomb the boston marathon and go on this killing spree and kill a police officer last night. >> stephanie: i heard somebody speculating on tv as we want to do when, you know there's a lack of information, but in terms of at this hour, whether there's speculation if it's larger terror organization. if it's a large well-funded terrorist organization, you don't have to rob a 7-eleven, but again, early speculation. >> yeah, that's a fair assessment that i'm confident even the police are reaching that conclusion, saying wait if they were connected to a large organization, they would have thought this through. they were organized in terms of how to carry out the boston marathon attack but then they didn't have a plan. one of the reasons that police were quickly able to suspect

that these two brothers were not from america, is apparently they are wearing leather pointed shoes with their jeans, at a marathon when most people would show up wearing sneakers or that kind of thing. so when police identified them and they were trying to put together this profile, literally two days ago police were suspecting that these were people who were from europe or eastern european. >> stephanie: wow, we're back in bruno mali territory. there will be a whole segment on footwear. "mother jones" reporting that there was a video posted on youtube about the prophecy. >> i had not heard that. my view on "mother jones" is if it is coming from them you can taked it to the bank. i had not heard that though. >> stephanie: we played the police spokesman describing them as caucasian, which they are -- >> chechnya is primarily sunni muslim. >> yeah jin chechnya a lot of muslims were forced as part of -- the part of society they were forced to have russian or boll garian names. so they were not allowed to take muslim-sounding names. so you are right, for americans who are not familiar there was

a long and bloody civil war in chechnya, and if these guys -- these brothers somehow has sympathies combined with whatever american hatred maybe that they developed by feeling they were outcast or didn't have friends or something, maybe there's something there in terms of a motive. >> stephanie: yeah as usual the "new york post" got it wrong. there is a great onion piece just entitled "jesus" this week. there is a lot of breaking news everywhere, but at some point you go from getting it wrong to being reallier responsible. they posted pictures of the wrong guys on the front page. >> yeah, the 20 years that i have been in this business, i have never seen a news organization as atrocious reckless and wrong as the

"new york post" has been this week. between first reporting that there were 12 dead when there were only three, to then -- they describe these two high school kids as the suspected terrorists, and it turns out one was a runner at a high school and just wanted to watch the marathon. any basic research and they would have been told sure we got these images from somebody who gave them to us, but that doesn't mean they are the bad men. but that's how the "new york post" and the murdoch organization seems to be running these days. let's just make it up. >> stephanie: yeah i'm literally looking at it right now. bad men, feds seek these two men. their faces clearly visible, as you said a student at revere high school. thank god nothing happened to

them, right? >> yeah i think if there is one silver lining these two kids will sue the hell out of the "new york post," and end up owning the murdoch organization and maybe, if i didn't know better i would think that rupert is just deliberately trying to give away the "new york post." >> stephanie: yeah. and maybe they will give us jobs, all of us. [ laughter ] >> stephanie: david, so, again, for people just waking up particularly out here on the west coast, just update us on what is happening at this moment. >> police have an apartment complex, apartment house surrounded in watertown, massachusetts, they believe the younger of the two brothers the one in the white hat, that he is inside. his brother, the one in the black hat that was identified

yesterday apparently was killed last night in a shootout with police. police say the situation in watertown this morning follows a pretty chaotic night that was stretched over several hours that began with a robbery inside a 7-eleven, they identified the brothers as looking like the people the fbi identified yesterday. a short time later an officer was killed on the campus of mit. there was a car chase. the car chase came to an end. there was a shootout. one of the brothers was ability to flee the vehicle and run away. the other one was gravely injured, taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. at some point the police released the names and identities of who they believe these two guys are. both have been in the

united states for about ten years. one was a medical student, and the other graduated from high school and got a grant to pursue a college education. but police believe they have the apartment complex surrounded. and this brother has been sending messages to police saying he is going to try to kill them. the big question right now is does he have any hostages and what can he do about it. >> yes and again, tamerlin tsarnaev is the older was 26 and the younger was 20, correct? >> that sounds right, and bravo for trying to pronounce them because i won't go there. >> stephanie: the other one i'm not going to try. yeah. at any rate we're sort of at the whim of -- amazing in this media age, first of all we saw the bombs blow up live on television because of obviously the nature

of marathons being televised and now everybody is transfixed watching this house, right? >> yeah, and one of the things that could be going on never find all of the media and exterioria pictures is a possibility if this guy has hostages or has an iphone and can do live face time with police or whatever. sometimes the standard police procedure is to try to get a robot to drop a phone in. now it's does the guy have an iphone and maybe make contact with him that way. and i guarantee the police know what this guy's number is and can call him. >> stephanie: for those of us that are old enough to be butch cassidy and the sun dance kid fanses, this is a whole new world. we'll be back with all of the latest developments out of

>> i said boston is going to need a massage and xanax after this. >> stephanie: yes. logan airport is closed. we're trying to find charlie pierce. david, i -- i don't know if you have had a chance to look at this "mother jones" stuff, again, we don't want to be the "new york post" of radio, but the headline is boston bombing suspect posted video on al-qaeda prophecy on youtube. >> yeah, the older brother, the one that was killed last night, 26 years old, his name was tamerlin tsarnaev. they were both russian-born chef kneeians. the older one was apparently a competitive boxer for a club named team lowell.

and he was a member of a team that won the golden globe championship. he had been boxing apparently for almost eight years, and he is quoted as saying that -- in a newspaper article about this mix mixed marshall arts center where he trained, he says that he does [ inaudible ] god said no alcohol. the article that describes him as a devout muslim and he says there are no values anymore and he worries that people can't control themselves. he doesn't usually take his short off because he doesn't want girls to get bad ideas and he is very religious. the loves the movie boreat even though he thinks some of the jokes are too much. he said he would rather fight for the united states than

russian in the olympics. so clearly this guy had a pretty good life in the united states. he was studying to be an engineer, had a pretty good career as a boxer. so it seemed like he had a lot going for him. >> stephanie: interesting. reading from "mother jones," and again, we're all just getting this in the moment. the deceased suspect who david was just speaking about appears to have posted a video, to his youtube page. you have been mentioned the way technology has been playing, it sounds like as we speak this other suspect there is a twitter account -- >> we don't know sfitif it is fake or not. >> stephanie: right. but he keeps repeating that he is going to kill the police that are supposedly surrounding the house, correct? >> yes, and that is coming from police scanners.

at least police there are talking about the surviving brother claiming that he is going to kill as many police as possible and taunting them online. there is a report from nbc that where police have this remaining brother apparently surrounded, or they think they have him surrounded, there are also two devices that are outside this building that have given police some pause, and they look somewhat similar to the devices used in the boston marathon bombings, and perhaps were thrown at police last night. so part of what is causing police to slow downis not just the hostage situation, but also possibly having to disarm or disabled these devices. >> stephanie: yes, and obviously police were connect when they released these pictures last night, and said they are extremely armed and dangerous. this is obviously what they were afraid of.

reading further on "mother jones," david, tamerlin was the one that was killed he had a, tube page where he posted religious videos including a fundamental fundamentalist australian preacher who railed against the evils of harry potter. wow. >> i have heard that harry potter could be considered a subversive threat. >> any religion is against witchcraft. >> stephanie: among the videos is the prof if i of the black banners of kurisn. the video is posted on what appears to be his youtube page. the it states that an invincible army will come from an area in central asia.

the youtube page also includes other interest in jihadism. he subscribed to a channel called ala is the one. just an interesting mix that they appeared to be doing well educationally, and who knows -- is this -- did something cause them to snap or what? >> yeah, and in the midst of all of this, as people are gathering more information, there is a doctor now quoted telling reuters -- a doctor that was at the hospital where the older brother was taken and pronounced dead, who is saying he died from possibly the blast of an explosive, and police have said last night in the course of this terrifying chase and pursuit that not only was there an exchange of gunfire, but the two suspects were throwing devices or bombs out at police. and according to this doc there is a possible that one of the

suspects was killed by his own device. [ overlapping speakers ] >> yeah, and there has been some suggestions that the surviving brother, one of the reasons police got tipped off about his location was because of fresh blood on a sidewalk or stoop. so the remaining brother may be injured, so all of that creates a composite picture for police who are trying to figure out how to approach the standoff. >> stephanie: boy, security has been incredible between all of this going on now, and the president was there speaking about the boston marathon victims. >> obama: yes, we will find you and yes, you will face justice. we will find you. we will hold you accountable, but more than that, our fidelity to our way of life to a free and open society will only grow

strong stronger god has not given us the spirit of fear, but one of power and love and self discipline. >> stephanie: if you just tuned in, we're with david shuster from current tv and the first suspect has been killed the second one as far as we know is holed up in a house. the city -- david what does that mean that boston is on lockdown? what does that mean exactly? >> earlier this morning and this would be longer than two hours ago. and police seem to have focused on this one particular complex or block in watertown, but before that, police asked that the entire city be shutdown, that they stop public transportation, buses, trains, shut down the airports all essentially to try to freeze and keep the suspects from having any sort of mode of

transportation. and that also encouraged all businesses to shut down, all universities to be closed and they said everybody should simply stay in your homes, do not trust anybody that comes to your door unless it's a police officer. and this was designed not just for the protection of the people in boston, but also prevent these two guys from having any sort of escape route. within the last two hours, as police have focused on watertown and as their suspicions have grown, and we don't have any official confirmation that they are convinced or that they are sure that one of the suspects is in this particular house that they are focused on they think he is but in the meantime as police have focused on watertown, i think the impetus for the rest of the city to be shut down is going to leave. >> stephanie: i thought -- one

thing the president said yesterday was very poignant along those lines. >> the world will return to this great american city to run hard harder an ever and cheer even louder for the boston marathon. >> stephanie: it's hard to say, but it seems like how much longer can this go on? we'll see, but today is obviously going to be a very tense day until we have a resolution. >> i think that's right. and there are reports that as many as 200 police are on this particular block or surrounding this block, and it's mostly s.w.a.t. teams and they have all sorts of equipment, and armors -- they look like tanks, and resources and robots to go after and determine what is left. the police have all of the resources they need, and if they believe that this guy is there,

and they are pretty confident that he is there is no escape for him. the question does he have host taijs. does he kill himself or try to kill police officers and the big question for the police in charge -- the fbi officer in charge who has to make the decision of how patient should police be? how can they determine whether there are hostages. do you put snipers up on your roof, and take it if you get a clear shot all of those tactical questions. and for now it looks like the fbi agent in charge is encouraging everybody to simply be parent and be very careful about the devices that have been left outside move the media back, and just wait and see, and try to figure out some way of perhaps making contact with this surviving brother. >> stephanie: david obviously people are always saying the police would prefer to take someone alive i suppose and get

information on the motive and all of that, but boy it does haven't the feel of that, does it? based on the amount of violence that has been done thus far? >> yeah, and i think also the murder of the police officer last night who apparently was in his car, and these two snuck up on him and just opened fire so police have made the determination that these guys were interested in killing as many people as possible and i think police are also pretty confident that this was not some sort of organized conspiracy that these are two guys probably acting on their own, or maybe with some tacit support from somebody else, but given how this has all played out, the only sophistication was with the bombing last week, everything that happened last night, has all been rather unsophisticated unsophisticateded. >> stephanie: and so we know at this hour one officer is dead.

another seriously wounded? >> yes there was one officer killed on the campus of mit and another officer was wounded during the gunfire exchange. >> stephanie: interesting being out here in l.a., david, it feels us to like that christopher dorner situation, where here we are and we have the suspect in a building and it's very tense. but please remain with us, if you can. >> absolutely. i'll remain right up to the top of the hour when i do the next cut in. >> stephanie: cut in as they say in the business. we're all newsy today. look at me i'm an anchor. police are still telling everybody to remain inside in boston. total lockdown. forty-five minutes after the hour, right back on the "stephanie miller show." >> we have to seem like a sexy

i think the number one thing that viewers like about the young turks is that we're honest. they can question whether i'm right, but i think that the audience gets that this guy, to the best of his ability, is trying to look out for us.

connecticut. >> there is suspicion that these two were not alone and there may be a third or somebody who assisted them, so essentially the manhunt is going to go well beyond this home and car in watertown that police have surrounded. they are also -- so in addition to the fears about a third person who may have assisted or helped them build the bombs there's some new wrinkles to the standoff with the police in watertown, there are now fears based on what was found on the older brother's body, some sort of trigger device police are fearful the younger brother may be wearing a suicide vest. >> stephanie: interesting. yeah, i'm just seeing -- reading that on the chyron as well on the television and other explosive devices they fear as well. i swear you are in a live

breaking news situation, and suddenly you are in the story line of "speed" of all of these movies, this is exactly what police are afraid of that there are other explosive devices planted in the house. >> yeah, there are at least two devices outside, they are concerned about him possibly leaving a trail of these, and are there hostages inside. and the surviving brother -- i'm sorry, the older brother, the 26-year-old was a registered voter, and had voted in elections the last couple of years. >> stephanie: interesting. eric holder yesterday. >> i want to assure you, the citizens of boston and all americans that we are working tirelessly to determine who was responsible for this incident. >> stephanie: and as you were saying david again is this

indicative at all of a larger organization or just another guy, this unnamed suspect? >> yeah that's one of the things, if they can take the younger brother alive is it possible these were just a couple of knuckle heads acting on their own because of their perverted belief about islam, or did they get sophisticated help? and these are all of the reasons that police have literally thousands of agents tracking down every family and friend of these two brothers just so see what are the sections that they have had, did they get any help and where did the help come from? >> james clapper yesterday. >> we don't know yet whether the attack was planned and executed by a terrorist organization, foreign or domestic or if it was an individual act. loan wolves domestic

extremists, will certainly determined to attack. >> stephanie: david it really is a whole new age isn't it -- i mean i suppose in terms of apprehending people but also as you were saying in terms of some sort of trail that they may leave in terms of motive. >> yeah and the expertise that the police have now in tracking phone calls, and digital reconnaissance and they can piece together every movement these brothers made physically, but also where they went online i guarantee everybody in the boxing club has now been interviewed by police to try to piece together what may have caused these guys to snap. at least the older one had seemed to be having a pretty

good life in america. and what would cause him to suddenly turn? >> stephanie: interesting, like for instance in this ricin letter, whack doodle that guy, reddit named him even before the police did. some people leave such a trail in terms of online that it's fairly easy. we are basically in the same situation for people that just tuned in. this house, they think he is in there, not sure if he has explosive devices or a suicide vest. there is an additional suspect that has not been named. i'm not sure what they are basing it on, but they think he may have taken a train to connecticut, right? >> yes. or somebody who might have helped them might have left the boston area and they have some

indication that he is possibly headed towards new york. i'm going to drop and let you finish the show so i can get in position for the news cut in. >> stephanie: okay. david. i was thinking of that -- the fbi special agent in charge yesterday said this. >> we consider them to be armed and extremely dangerous. no one should approach them no one should attempt to apprehend them except law enforcement. let me reiterate that caution. do not take any action on your own. >> stephanie: and that turned out to be sadly very very true as david as been telling us all hour. one policeman is dead and one is severely wounded. so we will get you the very very latest with david shuster at the top of the hour as we continue on the "stephanie miller show." ♪

massachusetts, we're bringing you a live picture now from our affiliate, and you can see police going door by door and checking this particular bloc in watertown where they believe that the suspect who is chef kneeian, he and the other suspect apparently were brothers. and police have not figured out motive, however, the latest information is that at least one of the brothers was a devote muslim. the older brother was killed last night 26 years old, had been a boxer in the united states, had been taking a break from community college in the boston area, and -- but kept talking about his devout muslim views. there are reports that he might have recently posted views on a muslim website. last night at about 10:30 in the

evening, police got a report of a hold up that was quickly followed by reports that the two men had been seen shooting a police officer to death on the campus of mit, police then found reports of a stolen vehicle they made contact with the stolen vehicle, there was exchange of gunfire, there was contact made of the two men. there were bombs thrown out at police. in the course of this exchange one of the two men was killed. the other was able to flee on foot and lead police essentially to this area of watertown massachusetts. here is the latest information from the governor in massachusetts. actually jwhat -- basically the governor just said one of the suspects is dead a manhunt continues for the other. they are urging everybody in the greater massachusetts area to

in new york after 9/11. they kept people off of the streets, but i don't recall them telling people to stay home. >> have you been able to talk to your family there? >> yeah everybody is okay. thank you for asking. they are in the house, and staying in the house, and not answering the door unless it's a uniformed policeman. >> wow. >> stephanie: charlie in terms of your headquarters, it must be scary, and david shuster was just telling us they're not sure what degree of explosive devices are in there. >> yeah and i'm judging this from what i'm watching on tv. it looks like they have suspicions that there might have been some sort of bomb-making equipment in this house. but the events of last night are just so strange. the only thing i can conclude is if these two guys when they put out those two pictures that they panicked as they

certainly -- these guys walked away, they weren't suicide bombers. >> stephanie: david shuster rejoins us now from the current news center. david you heard what charlie just said. was this started by the pictures being released do you think? >> it sounds like it. or it sounds like these guys suddenly realized that they needed money and to then try to knock off a 7-eleven, and then they see a police officer in their way, and just to take him out, to shoot him, the whole thing is so bizarre. one of the things that remains unclear, maybe charlie you can shed some light on this is it's unclear this particular section of watertown whether there's any sort of connection to this area and these two brothers or if

this is just where they fed, and is there one particular house or series of places that the brother may have gone? any information you got on that? >> no, as far as -- i know the neighborhood well, it's a middle class neighborhood with a lot of students from the various colleges living there. i don't want to call it a transient neighborhood but the way i can put it is there are a lot of homes there that people live in right after they get married. >> starter homes. >> yeah starter homes are places you go -- apartments and homes that have been broken up into apartments. are some restaurants, it is not too far from two considerably large shopping malls. one of them i guess is being used as a staging area for the press conference and such.

>> stephanie: yeah. charlie to your point -- >> yeah. >> stephanie: to the question you asked earlier about do you remember after 9/11 -- because i lived in new york and i do remember they shut manhattan -- i was in my way in and they said it was shut. and i was like what do you mean? but i agree, i don't remember them saying stay in your homes. what a week boston has had right? >> and it's such a psychic kick in the head. they had the interfaith service yesterday, and i thought the president rose to the occasion remarkably, as his deval patrick. and that was the end of it. okay. and then they were going to find these guys. that was going to be the way the story ran. the community had some together and we were all moving forward

together, and this thing explodes and now the suburbs are involved, and as david said it just seems -- it seems to me like these guys panicked last night, and had no money, and tried to get out of town -- as far as i know they stuck up the 7-eleven unsuccessfully. they didn't get any money? >> yeah or they had to leave before they could -- so, yeah it sounds like they didn't get any money and in the course of leaving the 7-eleven and trying to get away they saw a police officer sitting in his car, and felt like the only thing we can do now is shoot the guy, and then shortly thereafter they hijack a mercedes and there are enough witnesses to all of this that police are able to swarm on the scenes -- >> they hijack the suv and tell the guy they are the marathon bombers. >> yeah.

>> and then -- and i don't mean -- i don't mean to be ghoulish, and then leave him alive. you know? >> stephanie: the other report -- >> if you compare this for example to -- to eric rue dolph the guy who bombed -- bombed the abortion clinics in atlanta, he disappeared for almost a year -- i don't recall but it was almost a year. >> right. went underground. >> these guys had gone to ground with varying degrees of success and yesterday they go on what literally would have been called a crime spree. >> stephanie: right. right. david i don't know if you are hearing this -- i'm hearing at this moment the wounded man in that iconic marathon photo helped identify the bombers. he said he looked into the eyes of one of the bombers. >> right. the guy dropped the package

right next to him. he woke up under so much drugs and asked for a piece of paper and pen and wrote bag saw the guy right next to me. >> wow, that gives me chills. >> stephanie: yeah, as david reported earlier to the brother that was killed did have an device trapped to his chess right? >> they are describing it as some sort of device, and this doctor at the hospital said it looks like some sort of explosive device killed this guy. and it raises the question if in the midst of the fire fight the older guy blew himself up. >> but if he blue himself up in an suv why didn't the other brother get killed. >> well apparently the chase

was stopped -- >> all right. is there any evidence that he detonated himself on the street? >> that's not clear. it's not clear. police haven't clarified exactly where it was. the other thing just to add to all of this and how bizarre as we are talking about what a seemingly happy life these two kids had in the united states, both academically success, apparently one of them had a funny sense of humor and would make fun of the part of chechnya where he was from. and he said something like -- he said -- you know a car goes by with a chechnya and [ inaudible ] inside, who was driving? answer the police. he was making fun of his own ethnicity. >> yeah. i hate to -- i hate to make this comparison, because there is

this overlay of politics to this thing. you know what this reminds me most of? columbine? you have two misfits who go off the twig. you have homemade bombs a couple of misfits who go off of the twig for whatever reason and of course in this way they get away. they don't kill themselves but right now at this point it looks like these two guys you know came to a decision to declare war at one point. >> stephanie: yeah, and interesting, charlie, because david was reporting earlier that the older brother who was killed was in the boxing club and said if he qualified for the olympics he would rather fight for america than russia. >> yeah, and more than that he was a golden gloves champion, and he was -- he was talented. i mean -- i don't know if anybody makes a career as a professional boxer anymore, but

he was being directed in that direction. the irony is in the midst of a successful boxing career he was a very devout member of islam. he didn't drink or smoke, and talked about ala and spreading the word. so that was sort of a pretty obsessive, i would say religious view. >> yeah. >> stephanie: yeah. >> and possible tangle of motivations and i think the one thing we all have to remember is that the simplest answers in these cases are going to be the wrong ones. >> stephanie: yes, and the "new york post" will report all of them. >> that's amazing. and as much as civil libertarians are concerned about all of the cameras everywhere in this case -- >> it helped them identify them quickly. >> stephanie: yes. charlie pierce rejoi us not from boston as nobody can get to boston at the moment. logan airport is shut down and they are describing it, charlie as a massive manhunt, because they think they have the other brother holed up in a house. they are not sure. there was another possible suspect that has not been claimed yet. >> yeah. my understanding is they have moved away from the neighborhood now and it is expanding to more towns. again, we're in the period where nobody knows nothing, but

unfortunately doesn't help anybody in cable news because they have time to fill. >> stephanie: yeah. >> but the anti-immigration reform people are already beating the drums on this case even though they have been here for ten years. they have moved most of the stuff away from there. the street is still blocked off, but the police presence is considerably less now. >> stephanie: charlie what you just implied, were they american citizens? >> i don't know. i don't know immigration law one way or another. the younger one -- the one they are looking for now was a student at [ inaudible ] high school. one of them prepared to go to umass dartmouth. their father apparently is still in russia. he is giving interviews to the associated press. >> stephanie: david said -- >> talking points memo linked to

the explosion near waco the ricin guy. >> yeah, it has been nuts. and adding to some of the confusion is that police are not saying much at all about what is going on with watertown and their efforts to try to chase the remaining suspect. there is now some conflictingcations about whether in fact they have him cornered in one house or whether he is in one neighborhood. the house that police thought the 20-year-old suspect was in, they finally went in and didn't find him there. so now it's like okay, if they thought they had him cornered there, somehow he got out or he got out, now that opens up the entire area again where they have to go door to door and keep everybody on the lookout for this kid. and we're not getting much

clarity at all from the police, other than saying everybody across boston should say inside. >> stephanie: yeah, we were just talking to charlie pierce and chris heard they reopened logan airport -- and now i don't know if that has changed, because obviously the police had been saying everybody stay inside, because they are not sure who else is involved or where they are, right? >> yeah, and on top of that cnn is doing absolutely nothing to clarify anything this morning. they have up on their screen that police say the suspect may be in a gray honda crv heading towards connecticut, but is this the brother or a third suspect? cnn's reporting, of course is doing nothing to clarify that. it's a confusing situation and adding to it is some media

organizations that are being so conservative, and the police are not saying much. >> stephanie: and there had been a report that he took a train to connecticut, and now there's a report about a car with massachusetts plates. >> we're just not getting any confirmation on anything. >> yeah, when you look at the incidents from last night at 10:30, you have the 7-eleven that was robbed and the mit police officer that two people shot and killed him, and then the police chase and then one of the suspects is apparently killed by police or an explosive device that he sets off. his brother flees, they think he is in this particular house, and then they decide he is not in this particular house, and also if you are driving on interstate 95 be on the lookout for this

gray honda crv. good reason for everybody in new england to be on edge because these two brothers have shown every compunction to kill at will. >> stephanie: this was the fbi special age innocent charge yesterday. >> the only one observed planting we believe to be the device is suspect number 2 with the white cap. i don't have the precise time in front of me. it was shortly before the bomb blast went off. >> stephanie: and that iconic photo of the guy in the here with chair that had both legs blown off looked right in the guys eyes, when the guy dropped the bag. >> yeah, and certainly going back -- think about it this time yesterday it was several hours before the police or fbi released that video, but it's now that police and law enforcement had a pretty good idea what they

were looking for, by what he saw, by the surveillance video, everything from the type of shoes that the suspects were wearing which indicated that they were not americans, that they were probably european or eastern european and police didn't release the names yesterday, but clearly they have them, because in the middle of the night in the midst of this crazy chase, police released the names, and since then there has been all kinds of information available from family members describing them as they came to the united states ten years ago from chechnya. the older was a championship golden gloves boxer who had taken some time off from school but was academically successful. the younger one had got a grant to go to college. his father said he wanted to be a medical doctor. they both seemed to enjoy living in america, although there was

some expression from the older one about being a devout muslim and some equivalent pages in russian that these kids did not feel they adjusted well; that they didn't understand americans. a lot of people feel like they were outsiders, and haven't adjusted well, but they don't go off and start bombing marathons. >> stephanie: exactly. and i'm seeing again, just as we're -- we're getting information in. it looks like the boston police did -- i guess they disabled an ied device -- >> that's what it looks like. >> stephanie: -- this morning. not sure where david. and that is the concern that there are more of these devices. >> and that may explain. speculation given that police has locked down this particular street in watertown, and the theory among a lot of law

enforcement, if police locked down the street they believe the suspect was there, it may now be the case that they had to exercise extreme caution because of the explosive devices that were left there. that may explain how the police presence on that particular corner, and again, if police have somehow determined that the younger brother in the course of leaving these devices himself left the area, then that adds a whole new layer and challenge that police presumably have a general idea where this guy is but they don't have a specific block or house. >> also it seems that police are now at the house of the two bombing suspects uncle in montgomery county, maryland. they are questioning him and searching the house. >> yeah, the latest -- and the uncle has talked to both the police and the media and the uncle has said that these were sort of normal kids that came to the states ten years ago, and

seemed to be well-adjusted. he praised them for their academic achievements, and he said the uncle or father back in russia said the youngest one wanted to be a doctor. but obviously as part of any police investigation they are going to go talk to the uncle and say did you have any expressions of hatred towards americans that you detected from your nephews? >> david as i'm looking at my home page all of these s.w.a.t. team -- you don't even know which story it is. the home of the ricin mailer -- we heard this horrible audio fromo outside waco texas yesterday. [ explosion ] >> you okay? >> i can't hear. i can't hear. get out of here. please get out of here. >> stephanie: it's amazing obviously the focus is boston right now. and texas is obviously in shock, and we have i believe it is 12

dead at this moment and scores injured. >> yeah, 12 dead and a few more in critical condition. the relieving thing such a frightening seen two nights ago is at least authorities very quickly came out and said this is an accidental fire that started at the fertilizer plant, and when the fire reached the fertilizer canister or whatever they are calling it, it exploded and set off a larger explosion, and collapsed the roof of a nearby nursing home. at least authorities -- very quickly determined that this was accidental, which i think at least calmed some nerves when americans look up and turn on cable and see this gigantic mushroom cloud type of ball of fire that goes off in texas and thinks my god are we under attack? >> stephanie: yeah, and in the wake of 9/11 we had the anthrax

scares and people didn't know if this ricin thing was connected to what happened in boston. and apparently that is not the case. >> yeah, that was a guy that apparently made threats before. he had been an elvis impersonator, and worked doing comedy at various points in his life. but had been off of his medication, and police identified him every time he was off of his meds he would start fearing the government. but taken together between what happened in boston, the scary images from texas, and oh by the way, somehow ricin is arriving at these mail facilities. there's no connection between any of them but the overall connection is something that could be very frightening to a plot of americans as they look

up and see all of these news reports, and at least early on not a lot of clarification particularly in the ricin case whether this was connected or not. >> stephanie: and may i just say not the brightest bulb and seems to have been under the impression that the president opens his own mail. but we are still seeing again as we did monday this call -- fbi, because now we have this -- this second brother who -- who as you say they are not exactly sure where he is, but they are saying if you see this person anywhere call the fbi immediately right? >> yeah, and there was a report earlier they were asking people to look for a honda crv that was on its way to connecticut, police have put out a bulletin saying that vehicle has been located in boston. they wouldn't say where in

boston and only that there was somebody perhaps connected to this case who was in that vehicle. but they have found that vehicle in boston. nonetheless, there are -- you know, looking up at live pictures now -- and stephanie i don't know if you can see it as well, but it looks like there are some developments in watertown, police and media are rushing past some of the barricades. the police are trying to get the media to move back. so it looks like at this very moment there has been some sort of action or exchange, and just describing the pictures there are a whole bunch of cameramen that are running toward the police vehicles trying to get shots. police are still trying to push the media back, and there's an armored vehicle pulling up, and lots of police officers rushing away from the cameras, so i would -- who knows what is going

♪ nowhere to run to baby ♪ ♪ nowhere to hide ♪ >> stephanie: this hour brought to you by therabreath mouth-wetting mouth-wetting lozenges. we're still monitoring what is happening in boston. david you were reporting right before the break that they were telling the media to get back. >> yeah, there's been -- it looks like there has been some sort of a break threw. they are certainly pushed the media back from an area where the police has been focused on this morning. there was a furry of police that went rushing up the street, there were snipers and their guns trained on one particular area. it was hard to see except this whole rush of activity going into this area -- hold on one

second. >> stephanie: okay. >> okay. yeah just a lot of people -- a lot of people still being told to stay on the ground police with guns drawn all converging on one particular area. what we don't know -- obviously some sort of siting does the guy have a hostage? is he in a standoff with police? he is armed? the situation has not resolved it's a. the police are telling the media and everybody to stay on the ground. the media is 300 feet away. and then you have one of these armors vehicles with the police sniper on top. some of the police officers are moving pretty casually now from their vehicles back towards the media. but again it's sort of reading the tea leaves. obviously something has happened.

the question is, is it still going on now. but clearly there has been some development. >> stephanie: and as you just told us the police did find that honda crv that they were seeking, it was unoccupied and it was described as found near boston. there was fear that either he or another suspect was in that vehicle? >> right. there was some fear that there was another suspect tied to these two. and the police put out the warning about this particular honda crv. and they said that vehicle has been identified in boston. does that mean that there was a third person or was it a misindication? but nonetheless, again, just a few minutes ago reporters suddenly rushed up to where this armed vehicle was, and all of a sudden police were pushing them back. >> stephanie: david it looks like there is quite a bit of

activity again with police telling reporters to get back. >> right. and cnn blew it again, because they put up this rush of reporters, and only now they put up the plug that said earlier. so you would have thought this was happening live. >> stephanie: david we saying what a bad week this was for cnn that literally a reporter just said now this is not cnn reporting. it has run the gambit from mistakes made in the rush to be first, but boy oh boy, chris just handed me this. glenn beck who does have a website and something that is supposed to be a journalistic something, he continued to beat the drum of a conspiracy theory that the obama administration is

deporting a saudi national who is behind the bombings. it is the wild wild west. we were saying -- somebody made a good point in the paper yesterday, that it makes you almost wish for the days of the 6:00 pm news where you had to wait, but at least it was reasonably accurate and responsible. >> yeah, and the "new york post" and fox news have gone the way of making it up as they go along. cnn has fallen in this trap of so interested in beating everybody else by a couple of seconds that they will put something on the air that they haven't confirmed. and then they will say this may be speculation, but let me tell you. just report what you are seeing. especially like right now. you have reporters on the scene, who are 2 or 300 yards away.

some live pictures from our affiliate in watertown, massachusetts. this is the area where police believe one of the suspects fled to last night. the remaining suspect -- and again they have been identified as brothers originally from chechnya who have been in the united states for the last ten years, the younger brother who is believed to still be armed and very dangerous has been spotted in watertown, massachusetts, police believe they have the exact block where he has been cornered, and heavy police activity with their guns drawn, snipers with their guns drawn, suddenly converged on one particular scene. the media were all told to push back and get down. there has been no official confirmation of what happened over the last couple of minutes. there have been some long-standing questions from police about whether or not this remaining suspect had any host

taijs in this area but the theme right now caps a wild dangerous, and deadly night last night that began just after 10:30 when there was a robably at the 7-eleven a officer at mit who was killed, and one of the suspects was killed the other suspect fled to watertown, massachusetts, and police believe they have him cornered. most of boston remains in somewhat of a lockdown. the governor has urged people to stay home and stay inside. but again at this hour much of the attention now focused right on watertown, massachusetts. police believe they have the suspect cornered. a good new related to the

interpreter, and. in the course of searching for the younger brother who was last seen in this area it turns out he may have gone here because he has a friend or relative or somebody that was there. and the friend or relative they have captured or talked to or found. then the question becomes okay if they do have this other person, what does this other person know? has he been in contact with the remaining suspect? is it possible that the remaining suspect and this person were in the same home? and that this person was sent out to talk to police but in any case pretty active situation as we speak. >> stephanie: yeah john you were hosting "viewpoint" last night. >> yes, good morning david. >> good morning, john. >> stephanie: this has been so fast-moving. they just released the photographs last night, but

charlie pierce was speculating earlier was this what caused them to panic and go on this crime spree. >> that's what we talked about with a lot of our counter terrorism experts. the notion is once the pictures are released then you with watch. and when i went to bed last night -- for two nights in a row i have gone to bed hearing the beginning of a story and woke up to find out it is even worse. last night the shootout at mit just hand, and i thought as i was falling asleep why is political reporting a shootout at mit, and overnight an entire narrative unfolded and now it's going to be a time for americans to really come together and -- and there has been a lot of crazy ugly speculation on all sides about who was behind this. this was something that no one could have predicted from a

is so baffling about it all is the fbi when they look up the initial information they had wases the were foreign students who had been in the united states for ten years, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. the younger one had been extremely successful in high school to the point that he got an academic grant. his father said he was doing well, and wanted to be in medical school and his father said they had a conversation earlier this week and said hey i saw what happened in boston jhope everything is okay, and the brother said everything was great. the older brother always seemed to be enjoying life in the states. but he also expressed islamic views that were pretty strict. does all of this taken together

provide some kind of information? it doesn't quite fit the profile that a lot of people had suspected earlier in the week. >> stephanie: john what were you implying there when you were talking about progressives? >> well, obviously when the week began, we saw lots of completely unfounded bias speculation from both the left and right. a lot of our friends were saying it has to be a home grown right-wing racist gun nut. and a lot on the left said it has to be a middle east terrorist. and both sides were wrong. it does appear that these guys are home grown in a fashion. i don't really think al-qaeda is sending out 19-year-old college kids. the fact the bomb was so crude lead a lot of experts to believe

that it was not well funded -- >> and the fact they tried to stick up a 7-eleven. >> exactly. and this did not fit the al-qaeda profile at all. >> to that point the only thing really sophisticated this week was how it was carried out at the boston marathon, but the devices were crude as you pointed out. obviously they had financial concerns or -- and they didn't have a car. the fact that they are trying to carjack a mercedes and possibly later a honda or whatever they didn't have their means of transportation figured out. >> did not the 1 brother drive over the other brother this

morning? >> the latest from police was last night after robbing the 7-eleven and shooting the police officer at mit that they carjacked the mercedes they kept the person in that car for a half hour and then dropped him off at a gas station and continued on. and then one transit police officer was wounded in an exchange, and then there's a question about okay the older suspect was killed. was he shot by police or set off an explosive device. the doctor said it looked like he died from both. and that raises questions about the younger brother who fled that scene, does he have explosive devices? it would seem that he does, because he has dropped two so far, and is he wearing a suicide vest or have hostages? there is some level of planning that these guys were not going

to go down without a fight. but not this the point that they would have financial resources or a get away plan. >> stephanie: i think it shows how hypercharged we are as a country politically. because last night i knew there were people that went, hah hah they are white. i talked to an irish friend who literally said, oh yeah these are my guys. >> a lot of people that i know include including myself were hoping these wouldn't be middle east terrorists, because we're all hoping for an outcome that leads to the least amount of violence. so i'm not saying there's any positive side to any of this, but i will say that it does appear that this violence will not be leading to retaller to

agencies and we expect that they will be briefing you soon. we also have some police activity down the street, i don't know if you can see it from here. there was an initial report of a possible suspect. it is not suspect number 2. they are clearing that scene. >> reporter: [ inaudible ]? >> yes, it is. okay. thank you. >> stephanie: okay. david what i'm hearing there is he is saying it is not the second suspect. >> yeah, that -- i mean -- you know, that -- the thing that -- couple of things -- not the second suspect but the whole thing of the honda crv which turns out to be somewhat of a goose chase. and then the idea that this is not the second suspect that they think that brought them to watertown is a bit confusing. i didn't catch the top of that, so i'm wondering if there was

something he said at the beginning that we can't hear. but this ads to the confusion. >> stephanie: we are also hearing there was a traffic stop in niagara falls. a source said the two occupants were russian nationals. police now say that is not true. as you say, david, now we're not certain where they think suspect number 2 is correct? >> and this would get to somebody explained earlier and that if the police thought they had this suspect cornered where were they keeping all of boston under lockdown? and this gets to i think the fear the police had that while they thought the suspect fled on foot in watertown, and that maybe there had been some sightings, it is also quite possible that he fled to watertown and then left watertown and now is somewhere else. and that seems to be where this

is headed. there was a flurry of activity about 45 minutes ago, and now that turns to out to be somebody who was a associate or new the suspect or had some interaction last night, and mistaking precaution with everyone. the other thing that is confusing a lot of people and certainly confusing us is there were several explosive devices left in watertown. and in the course of trying to disable these explosive devices, someone on the scene thought they had some information. and they are taking every precaution and adding to the conclusions -- >> stephanie: and they are describing him as on the loose and again, urging people to stay inside with their doors locked and not open the door. we'll continue with all of the breaking events from boston as we continue on the "stephanie miller show." ♪

>> say good night, david. >> stephanie: yeah. for people just tuning in, tell us where we're at. >> any state police just had a news conference because there was a lot of activity about 45 minutes ago where police had felt or thought the remaining suspect had fled. there was a lot of activity a short time ago and police said this was not related to the second suspect who is still at large. there was some discussion that perhaps this was a witness or somebody who might have known the suspect. the other thing that's going on is that police still do believe that at some point last night, after this exchange of gunfire and throwing explosive devices at police, in which the older brother was killed, police still believe that the younger brother who fled fled in watertown and was in some 20-block area. the question that they have, and they are going house to house,

the question is did this suspect -- was he able to leave that area? was he injured at all? did anybody see him? they don't know. so there has been heavy police presence in this 20-block area of watertown. and officials are urging everybody to be cautious not to open up their business don't go to school public transportation has been shut down to try to make it more difficult for anybody to leave in the midst of all of that there was questions is it possible that he hijacked another car, a honda crv, and police were able to find the honda and make the determination even if the suspect had it he didn't get very far because the vehicle was found in cambridge. one of the suspects is dead, one is still at large, believed to be armed and possibly take rows and police think he might have been in one particular area but haven't found them yet. >> the ung sl being interviewed

right now on television saying we're shocked and calling the bombings an atrocity. and this situation is so fluid, as they say that they don't know -- we were all focused on this one house thinking this was coming to a conclusion at any moment. >> yeah, and police sort of laid off a little bit -- well actually for most of the hours last night. there was this 20-block area and then come dawn this morning they started to focus very intensely on this one house and this one car in front of the house, and there was a whole flurry of activity for about two hours, and then came the word that no this is not related to the suspect. that maybe it is related to a witness or somebody the suspect may have known. but a lot of activity in the area, but it doesn't appear they have anything particularly they can focus on. so for all of the police and

hour. david shuster from the current news center john fugelsang, they are describing it as massive manhunt underway for suspect number 2. the first suspect killed last night in a police shootout. and the uncle of the suspect appears to be shocked and horrified. he said they do not deserve to live on this earth. and as you said they hadn't spoken to them since -- >> since december 2005. >> stephanie: so he obviously must have had some inclination. >> yeah some contact with them. the father back in moscow had contact with them. we just saw a statement from the president of chechnya who is issuing a statement saying america should not draw a

comparison between these two and chechnya. people were shocked that dylan klebolt shot up people at columbine. people fall through the cracks and decide that this is something they have to do. >> stephanie: explain for a lot of people, like we have heard of chechnya, and we know there's trouble there, and just explain that. >> there's a civil war between russia and chechnya. chechnya is mostly muslim sunni muslim. there was some ethnic tension between the two. one of the most horrific terror attacks of all time, in which

several hundred kids at a school were murdered after being kidnapped. so tension between the russians and chechnians has gone on for some time. a lot of chechnians imma -- immigrated here. there are some with fairly conservative islamic views. some of them have been peaceful and who knows whether thatplayed any role in terms of these two brothers, but they were quoted on their facebook page as saying they didn't understand americans, had a difficult time relating to them and understanding american culture, even though they were fully immersed in it and seemed to be enjoying themselves. >> stephanie: john david reported earlier that the older brother wouldn't even pose shirtless because he didn't want

girls to have bad thoughts. and it leads to the question why do you come to america? as david has been saying it seemed like they had a pretty good life here. >> a lot of times our atheist friends are fond of saying religion is responsible for all of the war and suffering, and it's the right-wing extremist that are violent for all of the violence war, and sub -- -- subjigataon of women. the koran said if anyone killed -- if anyone saved a life it would safe the life of all human kind. this isn't a muslim problem
